MORE EMBARASSMENT FOR THE SKIPPER?!

A somewhat fraught few days in trying to put a team out, end up with us having 9 on the morning of the game, so a hasty phone call to the Bilsington skipper took place, and we agreed that if one of their players agreed to swop we would play 10 a side.

Our team was probably not the strongest to say the least with batting far more an issue that bowling. However, it’s a Saturday friendly so everyone got involved and we did the best we could, and more importantly still had smiles on our faces and the ability to mickey take!

We arrived at the Ground and indeed started with 10 a side as the Headech brothers agreed to play against each other.

I won the toss and elected to bowl (not really a difficult decision). Their openers were very cautious to start with particularly against a great few overs from our Saturday debutant Jamie, who bowled his usual few jaffas, with no loose deliveries offering easy runs at all. Not quite sure how he didn’t pick up a wicket or two?!

The scoring increased and catches started to go down, and it took at excellent run out from Jamie to break the partnership. By this time we were down to 9 as Nigel took a nasty blow on his shin and it came up like a golf ball, and unfortunately could take no further part in the game (but thanks for umpiring). Bilsington were also down to 9 as one of their players failed to show up!

Anyway, with us probably not being able to catch a cold, with 7 or 8 chances going down (it fact we didn’t hold a single chance at all), ranging from very difficult to relatively easy, with yours truly putting down a couple, including a skier that went through the hands and landed on top of my right shoulder knocking me to the ground as if I’d been pole-axed (I think I have “previous” for that); meant that Bilsington finished on 208/5. In a way I’m just glad that Andy Robinson and Danny Sansom weren’t playing otherwise they would probably have got a lot more than that! Pick of the bowlers was Jamie with only 18 off his 9, and then Neil with 2/36 off 9. He might have had a couple more but for catches and also me calling one of them back when he inside edged and was given out LBW – probably wouldn’t have done that in a League game. Extras also for them had a good day including 29 wides!

After a great tea, and as Ben marks his, I will also, so 8/10; we set about the chase (?). D Mc got us off to a brisk start with 32, but chipped to short mid-wicket at 53/1, which quickly became 55/4.

Unfortunately I made a bad error of judgement and called Bradley through for a non-existent single to run him out (there’s the headline – as well as the catch mentioned earlier).

Somehow I managed to stay in although scoring was difficult. Jamie and I put on just under 40, but once he fell wickets went quickly. I was then run out (again my fault really, although Chris C claims the credit, and I had to ask Brad as I came off how much he had paid Chris!); foolishly taking on Trev Nicholas’s arm when I was cream-crackered. I’d faced 90 balls in 31 and a bit overs and only scored off 20 of them – Tavare or Boycs would have been proud of tha!!

Chris was out very next ball and with that it was us all out for 101, with Nigel being unable to bat.

Fielding honours went to young Josh, closely followed by Bradley and Jamie. Bilsington gave the MOM to Neil for his spell – well done Neil, is that your first MOM?

My thanks to Paul A for umpiring and also to Peter for scoring.
